Luna will be presenting at the upcoming Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation Conference (QNDE, https://www.qndeprograms.org).  Begun in 1973, QNDE is the premier international NDE meeting designed to provide an interface between research and early engineering through the presentation of current ideas and results focused on facilitating a rapid transfer to engineering development.  Come join us in Provo, Utah at the Utah Valley Convention Center July 16-21 to learn about our ongoing work in nondestructive evaluation techniques.

This year at QNDE, researcher Matthew Webster will be presenting on Luna’s Nonlinear Pulse-Echo technique for Early Fatigue Detection in Inconel 718.  His talk will be held in Cascade D on Thursday July 20 at 4:50 pm.  Here’s a quick summary of Matthew’s presentation:

Identification of material damage in turbine engine components is essential for safe operation in extremely harsh service environments.  Current inspection protocols focus on identifying cracks during the last 20% of a component’s service life such that frequent inspections are required to ensure damage is detected prior to component failure.  In contrast, nonlinear ultrasonics techniques such as harmonic generation are capable of identifying precursors to cracking (e.g., lattice dislocations) during the first 10-20% of a components life.  However nonlinear ultrasonic measurements typically require large, specialized instrumentation and are limited to laboratory environments.  The goal of this program is to reduce the size and complexity of operating nonlinear ultrasonic systems in order to put these advanced non-destructive evaluation capabilities into the hands of field/depot inspectors.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel| Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Luna Innovations is presenting at the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS) triennial meeting in Toronto in August 2017.

The IAFS is a worldwide association of forensic professionals and of academic researchers in various forensic disciplines.  The IAFS meeting brings these people together to exchange ideas, learn new methods, and learn about state of the art technologies that make forensic science faster, cheaper, and more accurate than before.  The 2017 IAFS conference will be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel in downtown Toronto, and the meeting will focus on multidisciplinary collaboration in forensic sciences to best support the pursuit of justice and human rights.

Luna Innovations will be presenting on their new dissolvable forensic swab technology.  While sterile swabs are routinely used in forensic biological evidence gathering, there are critical limitations to the existing products and methods used.  While existing swabs work well to adsorb biological material from a variety of surfaces, the biological material remains partially entrapped in the swab fibers preventing it from presenting itself for downstream DNA analysis.  Luna has addressed this limitation with a dissolvable swab technology.  Luna’s swabs are created with cellulose acetate nanofibers to provide a high-surface area durable swab material that is insoluble in water and other common solvents, but completely dissolves in buffers compatible with DNA extraction.  Using this technology, Luna can provide assurance to forensic investigators that 100% biological evidence collected is available for extraction and analysis

Please join Blaine Butler and Nikolai Braun from Luna on Thursday, August 24 at posters 256 and 426 to learn more about the dissolving swab technology, and to pick up some sample dissolving swabs to try.

It provides a venue for presenting new scientific knowledge resulting from military-unique research and development. The MHSRS is the only military or civilian meeting that focuses specifically on the unique medical needs of the Warfighter. The MHSRS provides a collaborative setting for the exchange of information between military providers with deployment experience, research and academic scientists, international partners, and industry on research and related health care initiatives falling under the topic areas of Combat Casualty Care, Military Operational Medicine, Clinical and Rehabilitative Medicine, Medical Simulation and Information Sciences, and Military Infectious Disease. It is an annual four-day educational symposium that draws approximately 2,300 attendees across a wide range of specialties. The 2017 MHSRS will be held 27-30 August at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, Kissimmee FL.

Luna Innovations will be presenting three different advanced technologies at this years meeting, including developmental efforts aimed at stabilizing traumatic open globe ocular injuries, delivering localized therapeutics to painful peripheral neuropathies, and creating unique materials systems capable of interfacing with peripheral nerves. In addition, our open globe bandages have been provided to the Army Institute of Surgical Research (ISR) for first-in-kind ex vivo testing, and these results will be presented by LTC Gregory Hutcheson. Join us on Tuesday, October 3, from 2:30pm – 3:15pm as the Luna Innovations Medical Diagnostics Team presents a poster entitled “Multiplexed Detection of Early Organ Injury Biomarkers in Human Serum Using NanoSPRi-Based Assay” (abstract below). This work is part of the larger Assays and Diagnostics work occurring at Luna.

Poster Abstract:

Identification of biomarkers for early detection of organ injuries has been a valuable tool to find preventive and curative strategies needed to reduce morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. So far detection of organ injury biomarkers relies on methods such as PCR, MS, absorption-based assays, ELISA and microfluidic-Luminex, which are often laborious, expensive and with low specificity, and sensitivity. An advanced noninvasive testing with high throughput, high accuracy, fast turnaround time, and cost-effectiveness to detect early specific organ injury is therefore highly desired. To address this issue, Luna is developing a multiplexed biomarker assay based on nanoenhanced SPRi (Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging) technique that is specific and sensitive to a diversity of organ injuries present in human serum. Luna has demonstrated the proposed assay with high sensitivity down to 0.1 pg/mL scale and multiplicity by simultaneous detection of three biomarkers in 10% serum. The success of this project will result in a diagnostic product in helping both military and civilian hospitals determine whether a patient has organ injury, thereby allowing the possibility to take early curative intervention.

October 11- 14, 2017
Expo Guadalajara Convention Centre | Guadalajara, Mexico

Luna will be presenting its pediatric friendly Anti-TB formulation development efforts during the upcoming Union World Conference on Lung Health, taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico from October 11-14 at the Expo Guadalajara Convention Centre.

The Union World Conference on Lung Health is the world’s largest gathering of clinicians and public health workers, health program managers, policymakers, researchers and advocates working to end the suffering caused by lung disease, with a focus specifically on the challenges faced by the low- and middle-income countries. Of the 10 million people who die each year from lung diseases, some 80 per cent live in these resource-limited countries. The theme this year: ‘Accelerating Toward Elimination’ will focus on multiple fronts including tuberculosis (TB) and co-infections, improving tobacco control, and reducing air pollution.

Tuberculosis (TB) is among the top 10 causes of death among children worldwide, however, children with TB are given low priority in most national health programs and are neglected in this epidemic. Nonadherence to treatment regimens is cited as a major barrier to the control and elimination of tuberculosis, and completion of drug therapy is critical to assure recovery and reduce development of drug-resistance, a major factor in TB treatment. Patient acceptability of a medicinal product is considered critically important for adherence, and can improve patient outcomes in pediatric patients. Luna Innovations Incorporated, with funding from the NIH/NIAID is working on development of pediatric friendly Anti-TB formulations that are stable under ambient conditions for 2 years while also being palatable to children.

Please join Blaine Butler at her interactive poster presentation PD-922-14 “Stability of anti-TB drugs in pediatric-friendly formulations”, Saturday October 14th at 12:45 – 13:45 pm in the Poster Area, Diagnosis and treatment: updates on pediatric TB.
